ALHAJI (DR.) SHUAIBU YAMMA (1936 -2007)

Late Alhaji Shuaibu Yamma nicknamed ‘Shuaibu Sau’ (Sau : Hausa – mental math, calculation) was born to the family of Sha’aba Mahmud on 6th April, 1936, a direct descendant of Etsu Ibrahim Halilu, the 3rd Emir of Lafiagi.

He attended Lafiagi Elementary School between 1947 and 1951, Patigi Senior Primary School from 1952 to 1954. Throughout his primary school days he was the Headboy and in the 1st eleven of his school football team. He proceeded to Bida

Teachers’ College from 1955 to 1957 for Teachers Grade llI and llorin Teachers’ College 1958-1959 (Return Course) where he obtained his Grade Il Teachers Certificate at a sitting, a rare achievement in those days.

His quest for further education took him to Bayero University, Kano where in 1985 he obtained a Certificate Course in Supervision and Inspection.

He had several years of working experience. He was a primary school teacher from 1957 to 1959 and between 1960 -1969 Headmaster of various primary schools at Bele, Bacita, Edogi Dukun, Ganagagi etc. From 1969 onwards, he was the Area Headmaster at Central Primary School, Lafiagi and later at Patigi. He had a stint of short service at Bacita Sugar Company where he served as Field

Superintendent.

Alhaji Shuaibu took up appointment with Kano State Government i.e Kano State Primary Schools Management Board in 1977, deployed to Dawakin Kudu L.G.E.A.from where he was posted to Dabar Kwari, Tsakuwa, Rano, Rogo as Primary School Inspector from 1979 to1987. He was promoted Principal Inspector of Education and at different times posted to Gwarzo, Kiyawa and Dawakin Kudu.

He rose to the position of Education Secretary, serving as Rano L.G.E.A. and later Kibiya L.G.E.A. Secretary before retiring from public service on 31st December, 2004. While in active service, Alhaji Shuaibu Yamma attended several training seminars and workshops too numerous to mention.

He was Dawakin Kudu Local Government National Union of Teachers (NUT) Secretary in 1987, appointed Board member, Kwara State Property Development Company 1992 – 1993, became an Associate member of the Institute of Human and Natural Resources in 2002 and member, Progressive

Farmers Association, Dawakin Kudu in 2007.

In recognition of his contributions to the development of education in general and his demonstration of great administrative skills in particular, he was awarded honorary Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D (Business Administration) on 15th May, 2004 by the Institute of Human and Natural Resources, Abuja.

He was the first Grade 1 Headmaster in the then Lafiagi/Patigi LEA, a development that culminated in his deployment to Patigi to Head the largest primary school then.

Late Alhaji Shuaibu Yamma died in 2007 and was survived by two wives, nine children and many grandchildren who have kept the flag of academic excellence flying almost two decades after his death.
